THE GEAR UP MAINE STORY

GEAR UP Maine Story
part 1

A day on campus helps make the potentially far-off and far-away idea of “college” a reality. With your additional support, campus visits help provide students with the inspiration and tools to learn about possible careers and to reach the goal of continued education after high school.

This is Part 1 of a three part video series focusing on the data GEAR UP Maine has collected from the districts we have worked with in this grant.  This video addresses college campus visits for middle level students.

Personalized campus visits can be a great way for students to really picture themselves going to college. Visiting campuses that have programs they are interested in, gives them insight as to what courses they may need to take in high school. Early college courses are a great way to boost a student's confidence and prepare them for education beyond high school.

Preparing for college can, at times, be a confusing process for families. Luckily, a school counselor is someone that students and their families can turn to for support along the way. Families shouldn't feel that they have to go at the college application and admission process alone. Often times, counselors have anecdotal stories from past graduates to share with their high school students to bust some myths and give them a better look into the reality of life during postsecondary.
